Cultural Heritage
Obertraun’s cultural heritage spans many centuries of exquisite taste and legend. Salt mining in Hallstatt is older than the Seven Wonders of the World and is designated a UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage region. Retrace the fascinating history from the Hallstatt period to modern day by visiting the World Heritage Museum, the Catholic Parish Church and Charnel House, located behind the Romanesque Chapel of St Michael – the storage space for exhumed bones since 1600. Walk through time on a guided tour through the World Heritage Market town and discover 7000 years of history in under 2 hours!
The Dachstein Caves Park is a natural monument with carefully laid paths which lead into the most wonderful and bizarre cave formations of frozen water and lime-stone, subterranean halls, foaming streams and mountains of ice. Fables from eras freeze years into seconds and decades into minutes. Take the time – the time to dream because a visit to the Display Caves falls nothing short of the most memorable experience for the family.
Debbie and Trevor will be glad to help you decide a suitable itinerary and ensure you make the most of your stay in Obertraun.
